In an unprecedented move, ustwo games, the developer of Monument Valley, revealed a stunning amount of detailed data about its mega-hit app.

Costing $1.4 million for the core team of eight developers to create both the original game and the Forgotten Shores expansion, Monument Valley generated over $5.8 million in revenue. That’s $4.4 million in profit that they get to stuff under the old mattress after 84 months of work.

24 percent of players went ahead to purchase the Forgotten Shores, and 50 percent of players decided to stick it out and completely finish the game. No data was provided for the Ida’s (RED) Dream puzzle pack.

Monument Valley saw over 2.4 million official sales, with 54.2 percent of those coming from iOS and 45.8 percent of downloads came from Google and Amazon platforms. The puzzle game was installed on 10+ million devices, the big gap between the 2.4 million purchases attributed to family app sharing plans and pirated downloads.

The U.S. was the top selling nation accounting for 38 percent of purchases, followed by China with 12 percent and five percent from the U.K. and Germany, tying for third.

It’s extremely rare for companies to release this kind of details to the public, but it shows that ustwo has created a massively popular and lucrative title.
