Coming hot on the heels of its mobile release, philosophical puzzler The Talos Principle has launched for VR on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive as a standalone purchase.
The Talos Principle VR has been rebuilt “from the ground up” to take advantages of the platform, because the differences between a flat world and a three-dimensional one are huge. The new edition comes with room scale support and movement options like teleport, instant teleport, blink teleport, and classic full locomotion.
Developers have also made saves from previous desktop versions transferable to VR.
Croteam developer Alan Ladavac explained the reasoning behind making The Talos Principle VR a standalone edition and not an update to existing versions.
“In short, we didn’t spend several man-years on this just because we had nothing better to do,” wrote Ladavac. “But because it was necessary to make it even playable… In order for VR to work, it has to pay off to developers. But that’s not going really well: On one hand, the market is small, and you can’t sell many copies.”
In the end Croteam is letting the market decide the fate of its future VR efforts.
“[Is] this VR version of the game worth to you the price we ask for it?” poses Ladavac. “If yes, please buy it and enjoy it. We will make sure to support it, like we always do. If you don’t, then don’t buy. If not enough people choose that it does, then we won’t be doing VR in the future – no hard feelings.
