Sony’s classic puzzle platformer Shadow Of The Colossus will be getting a remake headed to PS4 in 2018, the company announced during its press conference at this year’s E3.
Confusion followed the announcement over whether Sony’s upcoming effort would be a remastering of the game or a full fledged remake. In the following days, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida came forward to clarify Sony’s plans.
“It is a remake,” explained Yoshida. “The game content is the same as the original version, but all the assets are being remade. I figured we could use such tech to make if we’re going to make Shadow of the Colossus in the PS4 era. Bluepoint is the development company behind the PS3 remaster versions of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. So we know them rather well.”
Yoshida went on to explain just a bit of the details from the remake.
“[Shadow of the Colossus is] the same, but player preferences for controls and such change over time, so we’re working on implementing a more modernized way to play,” tells Yoshida. “And of course you can play with a feel of the original version, but what we’re doing is showing how great the original work is, using today’s technology. Ueda-san (ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and the Last Guardian lead designer Fumito Ueda) wasn’t that involved much this time.”
Team Ico developed the original Shadow Of The Colossus for PlayStation 2 back in 2005. Bluepoint Games picked up the torch in 2011, handling the remastering work for The Ico & Shadow Of The Colossus Collection that launched on PlayStation 3. The PS4 version will be developed by Bluepoint Games.
